I recently heard that the dropout rate in Jacksonville is 50%. This is a scary statistic since lack of a diploma is related to both unemployment and crime. If 50% of the student population is dropping out, I propose that we follow the example of Kansas City and close 50% of the schools. The operating costs saved could go towards the development of vocational centers so that the youth who are not only not college bound, but not even high school bound, could have a chance to become productive citizens of the community. Since self esteem is linked to accomplishment, this would be a win-win solution for both the potential drop-outs and the community at large.
